"I can't believe the sun spots on my hands have gone after one session!" Mrs Sherman, Dunstable
Freckles - Sun Spots - Birthmarks
IPL and Lasers release short pulses of light that is readily absorbed by the high concentration of melanin found within freckles, sun spots (lentigines) and birthmarks. The rapid absorption of light energy heats and causes the destruction of the excess melanin within the cells.
With IPL a layer of chilled gel is applied to the area. The light applicator is placed on the skin and a short pulse of light is released. The applicator is then moved to the neighbouring area and the process is repeated until the entire area is treated.
IPL is used in the first instance on freckles and sun spots. Lasers are used for either cafe au lait birthmarks or some sun spots. Often only one to two shots are required on an individual sun spot, freckles and birthmarks may need multiple shots.
Most clients describe treatment as mild and tolerable, however, it does have a little "down time." This is due to the lesion initially darkening and then forming a micro crust which "flakes" away whilst taking the excess pigment with it. This process usually takes between one to two weeks and should be allowed to happen naturally.
Most people don't experience side effects, the area can just be a little red when using the IPL. It can take a little longer to settle when using Lasers, but this usually happens uneventfully. Most people are suitable for treatment, however, we cannot treat suntanned skin.
A full consultation and patch test are carried out prior to treatment.
